History Of Elbow Cay
Founded in 1785 by Loyalists fleeing the aftermath of the American Revolution, most famously including Wyannie Malone, Hope Town marked the first permanent settlement of Elbow Cay. Migration from Harbour Island, Eleuthera assisted with the settlement’s growth, and the residents of Hope Town were able to carve out a modest living for themselves via farming, fishing, wrecking, and the boat building trade.
The iconic lighthouse was constructed in 1863, and is noteworthy for being the last operational kerosine fueled lighthouse in the entire world. In recognition of this and the historical significance of the structure, the Elbow Reef Lighthouse is proudly displayed on the Bahamian $10 bill.
The mid 20th century brought an economic boom to the entire Bahamas with the beginnings of the year round tourism industry, and Elbow Cay benefitted from this. Modern Hope Town/Elbow Cay is a unique blend of past and present in terms of lifestyle, architectural designs, and more. It is a must-visit on any Abaco vacation!
